WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Saturday February 15th our Cape Town team is headed to Blikkiesdorp, one of many townships surrounding the Mother City. The reason of our visit is that we are finally repeating our Photography Contest there.
We first organized the Slum Photography Contest in the slums of Dharavi in Mumbai, India. There we gave 45 kids an analogue camera and a workshop on how to use it before sending them of to document their lives and their youth. All kids got the prints of their film rolls and kept the cameras. Since 2011, we have been selling their pictures to raise money to buy new film rolls for the kids and to repeat the project elsewhere. It allows the kids to experiment with photography and contribute to the happiness of another kid living in similar circumstances somewhere else in the world.
This Saturday we’ll be giving disposable cameras to 40 children ages 8 – 16 from Blikkiesdorp. They will learn how to take a good photo, see an exhibition of the pictures of the previous participants and will start experimenting with photography as a way of expressing themselves and their situation.
Ways of helping:
We are putting all our effort and if necessary our last cents into this project. We haven’t been able to raise enough money yet with the sales of the 2011 pictures to finance the repetition of the project in Blikkiesdorp. We need a total of € 1.350,- to repeat this project (See break down of costs below). There is a number of ways in which you can help us:
- Donate an amount of choice to the project. Whether it is 10 cents or 1 million euro, dollar, rand, whatever, we are very grateful for your support. You can wire transfer the amount referencing “SPC Donation” to the account in name of No Man’s Art Gallery, ING Bank 4561556, BIC: INGBNL2A, IBAN: NL10INGB0004561556, or pay using Paypal (see Donate button on the right)
- Purchase a picture of the previous participants in our webshop. Every purchase includes a 15 euro donation to the project.
- Send your old, simple and functioning analogue camera to the gallery in Amsterdam. We’ll send them to Blikkiesdorp so that the children can continue experimenting with photography after the project is finished. The address to send it to is Nieuwe Herengracht 119, 1011SB, Amsterdam
- Find us a sponsor for the cameras or digital scanning to keep down the costs.
