Marilyn Sonneveld (b. 1990, NL) is an interdisciplinary visual artist who lives and works in Amsterdam. She graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam and works across oil painting, glass, sculpture and installation. Moving fluidly between materials, techniques and scales, her practice explores intimacy, memory and the body through a vivid interplay of colour, form and transparency.

Sonneveld’s work often begins with personal experience, everyday gestures and the emotional complexities of close relationships. Her paintings and glass works move between abstraction and figuration, creating spaces where recognisable forms emerge and dissolve. Rather than offering fixed narratives, they evoke the fragmentary nature of memory, where images, sensations and emotions remain present in traces, shadows and atmospheres. Her recent work has increasingly turned towards the dynamics of intimacy, care and kinship, exploring the ways in which love, vulnerability, loss and belonging shape our relationships with ourselves and with one another.

In 2023, Sonneveld presented When the Sun Comes Up, a large-scale, site-specific glass installation at Kunsthal Rotterdam. Made during her pregnancy, the work marked an important moment in her practice, as she turned towards her own physicality and the transformative experience of impending motherhood. The installation brought together nine painted glass panels, layering depictions of the body to reflect the physical and psychological changes of pregnancy.

Sonneveld was nominated for the Royal Award for Modern Painting in both 2024 and 2025, with her work included in the corresponding exhibitions at the Royal Palace Amsterdam. Her work has been exhibited internationally at institutions, galleries and art fairs including Kunsthal Rotterdam, Het HEM, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, Unfair Amsterdam, EDJI Gallery Brussels, PADA Lisbon and No Man’s Art Gallery’s international programme in Mexico City. Her work is held in public and private collections including the Dutch Government Collection, De Nederlandsche Bank, ABN AMRO and YCC Club.
